Unlimited Miles
Colorado: places to sightsee between denver and aspen?
I am flying into denver this afternoon... Have a rental car with unlimited miles to drive from denver to aspen and want to take some stops along the way. Here are some places I want to see:
Vail
Crested butte
Independence (is the ghost town still there?)
Georgetown
...any other cool places!
If anyone is from colorado or has taken this trek and has a convenient route to see these cool places I could really use some advice on the best way to manage my trip!
thank you!
Crested butte is a long way around, roads don't connect easily to I-70, you'd have to go through Gunnison or Cottonwood Pass. Regardless, it is one of the most beautiful mountain towns up there in my opinion. Paradise Divide is accessable via washington gulch (in most medium cars and vans with good drivers) and really worth a visit.
Check on the roads for Independence, it might not be 4wd but see if the roads are still open.
Some other good stops besides Georgetown would be Leadville (very historical and good museums), Breckenridge (great ski-type town just off the overcrowded I-70 ones), and Frisco and Lake Dillon are really nice scenic areas.
Also check out Snowmass Village (famous for the recent ice age uncovering), and Redstone south of Carbondale is a neat town with a castle and free hotsprings on the river (ask locals for directions), also Marble is a great place for a visit if you're fond of the rock, and they have jeep tours out to the Crystal Mill (google image that one - its quite photographed)
