Should there be pressure under the oil fill cap? (97 Nissan Altima)?
I was given a 97 Altima. The car appeared to be in excellent mechanical condition but has 130k miles on it. My dad was checking the oil, coolant, and all other necesseties. He said he took off the oil fill cap while the engine was running and oil started spewing all over the place. We really dont have experience with an import like this. So my question is, is the pressure under the cap normal? If not, do I have big problems ahead of me? He also said that the sparkplugs were covered in oil as well. Thanks.
Where can I find the PCV valve? Is it possible to check if it is shot?
As has already been noted, your probable problem is a bad pcv valve. Yes, it needs to be fixed. No, it won't normally cause serious engine problems - but you are running the risk of blowing all of your oil out (very bad) until you get it fixed. Wipe the oil off the outside of the engine with paper towels or rags and check the dipstick again to make sure that the spew your dad noted wasn't the last of the oil before you drive it to the mechanic's. It shouldn't take him all day to fix.
If you want to do it yourself, most of the big parts houses have repair websites now. Type your car info into the one referenced, or look in the pcv how-to in the subpage.I've always found their stuff helpful and correct.
