my car runs in park great. when i shift into drive or reverse it shuts off unless the idle is high. whats up?

car is a 1965 plymouth valiant, ive rebuilt the carb. new spark plugs, new rear breaks now, suddlenly, when normal idle is set, the car wont stay running in drive or reverse. with high idle, it runs, but its too high for everyday driving, please help!

Timing chain or improperly rebuilt carb or tune up.
