How can I lift the stove top on Kenmore stove model 362.7556591? There is some type of latch on each side.?

There is some type of latch on each side of the stove top near the front. I don't know if I should push them in, slide them or what. Nothing seems to work.

It's a gas range, the top's not supposed to come up. Should the burners or ignitor electrodes need servcice, the control panel has to come off before removing the top for service. You damage the wiring connections by not doing it properly.
