Mustang Sport
Is the GT500 Mustang a Muscle car a pony car or a sports car?
Just trying to find some clarification since i have heard people say its this or that or the other.
All mustangs ever built are pony cars. Mustang, pony, both horses. Mustang is what caused the "pony car" phrase to be coined to begin with. Here's why:
Definitions:
Muscle car: 2 door, 4 seat, rear Wheel Drive mid-size coupe that came with the largest corporate engines available, generally reserved for big blocks only, manufactured between 1964 and 1972. No muscle cars after 1972, by the definition. Ford Torino, Dodge Charger, Chevrolet Chevelle, Pontiac GTO, Plymouth Road Runner, AMC Javelin
Pony car: 2 door, 4 seat compact rear wheel drive coupe, usually based off the entry-level or economical chassis of the same year, smaller engines, standard 4 or 6 cylinders with optional V8's, low priced for high volume. Ford Mustang, Chevrolet Camaro, Pontiac Trans Am/Firebird, Plymouth Barracuda/Cuda, Dodge Challenger, AMC AMX(I might have the AMC's bass ackwards).
Sports car: 2 door, 2 seat compact rear wheel drive lightweight roadster. These are always rear wheel drive, always roadsters (convertible only), lightweight and usually have 4 cylinder engines, nothing bigger than a V6 typically. They can have a hard top, but must be based on the roadster. C1 corvette, Mazda Miata, Triumph Spitfire, Triumph TR-7, Honda S2000, AC Ace, MG Sprite, Toyota MR-2 Spyder, Porsche Boxster, Pontiac Solstice, Saturn Sky.
Most people have preferences for one make or model, and many mustang people call their cars muscle cars, but are mistaken. Likewise, many people think that just because a car is fast, that it's a "muscle car", or that because a car has 2 doors it's a "sports car", which both are false. A car can have 2 doors and be sporty, but not be a sports car. An early 90's Mercury Capri was small, 4 cylinder and a roadster, but it was front wheel drive.
