How do you do a drag race in Need for Speed (Most Wanted)?

I bought the game and was having fun until I got to a drag race I needed to pass to move on. I tried a couple times but I kept blowing my fuse and haven't played in about a month because I don't get how to win a drag race. It tell you to press the up arrow but then you gotta stop pressing it because your enjoy will blow but then you go like nowhere. I am talking about NFS most wanted but please if you can, tell me how to win a drag race or if you have drag race tips!!?

Well, you have to shift at the right time to prevent the engine from blowing. Look at your speedometer to find out when to press the shift button. If you use Speedbreaker, you must shift down. Oh yeah, avoid traffic!!!
