What makes Speed such a great movie?

Speed, besides Die Hard of course, is one of my all time favourite action movies. It's also very different from some of the other action movies I know. It's very fast paced and lots of fast decisions have to made. But I was just wondering, why was this movie such a success? Also, everyone has been commenting on the horrible acting Keeanu Reeves performs in every movie, with his non emotional mono tone voice, they say. But I quite like him, at least in this movie, so what's the deal here? Maybe Dennis Hopper made the movie great.
