Roadster Rare
What is a Good Roadster Nowadays?
Here are the things I am looking for - tell if you have any ideas:
- 2 Seater
- Damn Good Looking
- Sporty
- Fast
- Manual Transmission (i.e. No Auto Mercedes')
- Must be a Roadster (Convertible)
A Good benchmark is the BMW Z8 - that sort of thing would be perfect. The only reason I don't get one is that they are Very Rare and only come in LHD.
Price: No object
Boxsters are very very good now. Before 2003 they sucked, but '03 and on they have been fixed inside and out. They handle like...well, you couldn't wreck it if you wanted to and the S has plenty of power for a roadster (but not enough to compete with sports cars like 911s or muscle cars like Corvettes).
Solstice/Skys SUCK. Utterly suck. Poor quality, low power, handle like bricks.
S2000's are decent, but I'm not a fan of the styling. The handle OK (just, OK), but have plenty of power.
Z4s are OK. They're decent, but don't live up to what other BMWs would put as a benchmark for sporty (like an M3...or even 335).
Mercs, yup, no manual transmissions there, so off the list.
Gallardos are very expensive and needy for maint.
F430s are VERY expensive and unforgiving handlingwise.
Vantages are horrible on fuel and expensive to maint. They're expensive, but not selling well, so you might be able to talk to dealer down $20K.
Corvette (any trim) have cheap interiors, but all the power you'd ever need (or in the case of the Z06 or ZR1, ever need).
Elises have VERY VERY good handling, but spartan interiors and they're awkward to get in and out of. Not to mention storage space for a 2L of soda and not much else.
Technically some of those are more convertible/removable top sports cars, but they meet your standards.
Against your Z8 standard I think the best nowadays would be a Boxster S for handling (and overall) and a Corvette for power.
