Hand Drive
How much is to register a right-hand drive car in the US?
I want to buy a car from Japan and have it shipped here in California. I heard that customs papers and registration is a bit of a hassle. I was wondering how much it cost to legally register and approve a right-hand drive car here in the US and especially in California because i know California is strict when it comes to the DMV. Thank you.
Right-side-driver vehicles may not be registered for road use in the United States. The United States is a left-side-driver country.
Even if you could register the vehicle, it would have to undergo extensive safety and emission testing at Customs, paid for at your expense. Minor variations in its design from American government standards, like the size of its license plate brackets and language on its VIN plate, will quickly run into tens of thousands of dollars in required modifications.
Lastly, are you aware of the cost to ship a car from Japan to America? A 20 foot container for trans-Pacific passage costs over $10k.
