Ford Freestar
How do I fix the traction control light from constantly coming on in my 2006 Ford Freestar?
Some days this light will come on within 1 block of my house. Other days it will not come on until nearly 3 or 4 miles away. The manuals all say it is a malfunction of the Ford AdvanceTrac traction control system. OK, simple enough? Wrong. Too many possibilities for the average guy without paying at the dealership for a full diagnostic scan.
OK, you are right. This IS a malfunction of the overall traction control system. BUT>>>it's not just the wheel speed sensors. It also involves the ABS braking system, the throttle position sensor, etc. I had exactly the same condition on my 2005 Freestar. I asked all kinds of questions, I read all kinds of posts and blogs on the Internet. I started re seating all of the connectors on the underside of the van. I pulled each wheel sensor and ohmed them out. I pulled the main connector off the ABS block just under the driver-seat area on the bottom of the vehicle. All of these in vain. I finally decided to try the re-train method. I disconnected the battery for an hour. I then reconnected the battery, and took the vehicle for a drive. The light again came on after a short distance. I drove another 3 miles. I pulled over and restarted the vehicle. Now I drove again. No light!!! It turns out the system MUST be retrained after it does go through some sort of malfunction. OR you can take it to the dealer, have them ERASE the information and retrain it...you decide. It's been over a year now without any more "constant-on"...only the normal "flashing" when the wheels actually sense a wheel is spinning on the wet roadway.
