Exceptional Shape

Fire rescue guys/girls, heres a question...Im concerned about my Eyes, Back, Age, and History?

Im concerned about going through 2 years of school for EMT, Paramedic, and Fireschool, to then discover that I might be passed by because of the following.
2 herniated discs.
An eye condition, (I see 20/30 corrected, but, due to my condition, at times, I have trouble seeing detail at a distance.
I am 39 years old. I am in excelent physical health, but, do have recurring problems with my back. (usualy managable). I run 5- 10- miles no problem, and am in exceptional physical shape over all.
If asked about a felony, the truth is, as a juvenile, I was convicted. I alwaysanswer "No" to the crime question on an aplication, but, the pollygraph?
I applied for the EMT program, and I am serrious about this as a career. I can likely perform very well on any physical, or written tests.
Ive had success in other areas, mostly self employed. So, this is a new world for me.
Does anyone have any thoughts on this matter.
Thank you

This might be a question best directed at the fire department you are interested in working for. The answer really is going to vary from fire department to fire department. Every dept sets it's own standards. For some, herniated discs might be a disqualification, but for other's it might be perfectly fine. Same goes for the eye trouble and the felony conviction as a juvenille. I thought that convictions as a juvenille were expunged from your record when you become of age? That might be something worth looking into. If it's not on your record, I wouldn't feel the need to tell anyone about it.

I'm not going to lie to you. EMS is very, very hard on your back. My boyfriend has two herniated discs in his back, completed paramedic school without a problem, but is finding that the day-to-day job can be a bit painful for him. It's manageable with lots of Alleve, but he's considering a career change because he doesn't want his back to get any worse. Seems like if you run 5-10 miles a day, then your back is doing pretty good, because my boyfriend can't run with his back conditon (the bouncing puts too much stress on his back). Definitely pay attention to proper lifting techniques, because you can't afford to lift incorrectly.

I know this is a vague answer, but it really depends on the individual fire department's hiring policies.
