Durango Slt
I have a 2002 Dodge durango slt, why does the belt squal when starting?
The belt squals only when starting everything is fine when driving. My check engine light is also on. Is this because of the squaling or could there be another problem? Both of these things happen more so in the winter.
Could be one of three things. Bad belt stretched out or dry rot( ck for cracks in the belt). Worn belt tensioner(spring loaded pulley that holds the belt at the proper tension could have a weak spring). Or one of the pulleys in the system is too hard to turn because of worn bearings or component. If the belt, pulleys and tensioner all look fine try putting a dab of rubber friendly silicone grease on each side of the belt while the engine is off. when you start it up the grease will evenly spread on all surfaces and usually eliminates noises. The check engine light does not have anything to do with the belt. Everything is harder to turn when cold thats why its worse in the winter.
