Is it wrong for an environmentalist to drive an SUV?

I have a classmate who is very passionate about the environment. He is intelligent and articulate, yet he owns a big truck. When I questioned him about the contradiction, he stated what he drives has no bearing on his beliefs, and he does not drive it much anyway. How can I convince him that he is part of the problem?

Does he 'need' the SUV for anything in particular? eg does he do a job as a volunteer for forestry work which requires heavy duty vehicles or something like that?

If he believes that you should try to minimise your impact on the environment and he doesn't need off road capabilities, he should be driving a more efficient vehicle. He's choosing to create significantly more pollution than he needs to. There's no two ways about it: he's a hypocrite.
