Cummins Diesel
Best Year for Dodge Ram 2500 With Cummins diesel?
What is the best year, quality and maintenance-wise, for a 2WD Ram2500 with the Cummins diesel. Any thoughts on the transmissions?
I plan on buying one to pull a fifth wheel when I get back to the States this year.
Please weigh in Dodgeman.
I do plan on the manual tranny, I've driven manuals for years and have a BMW 520 I drive right now.
Problem with the manuals is you don't know how the previous owner drove it, so it's a crap shoot on the clutch condition.
I figure a 2003 with less than 50K would be good, don't want anything too old, but I'll never buy a new vehicle again.
I would say to find a 2003 or newer truck, the fuel filter is very easy to change on them, transmission fluid lasts for 70,000 miles before needing serviced(although towing a fifth wheel i would rec. sooner service intervals). one bad thing about them is they have weaker springs in the rear than older models. for 05-06 models they increased torque to 610ft lbs instead of 600.plus 2007 they are coming out with a 6.7liter cummins not sure of ratings though. The 03 and up rear axles use synthetic 75w140 gear oil, first initial service I recommend at 30k then every100-150k.
