Country Wagon
How long did it take to come across the country in a wagon during the westward expansion days?
I was wondering how long it would take the typical family to travel by covered wagon to California during the gold rush days? A rough estimate, perhaps?
If you were able to manage 10 miles a day, you were doing well.
NY to LA (probably the longest trek possible) would have taken most of a year.
But, most people stopped in St. Louis to provision themselves for the trek. From there, you can time the journey and become part of a convoy heading across the plains. That would give you the benefit of numbers as well as a guide that knew the correct paths.
Maybe 3 months from St. Louis to California.
