Clean Must
Why must military personnel be clean-shaven?
I've been looking at some photographs of civil war-era soldiers and I've noticed that many of them sported some kind of facial hair. I've also noticed that many senior officers of WWI had mustaches or beards or sideburns.
When did the US govt institute that soldiers must be clean-shaven? And why?
Thank you.

In all actuality it serves a couple of purposes. First of all, of course it will help to ensure a good seal with the NBC (gas mask).
As for uniformity, it is not as much that as for the fact of "military appearance". Yea, you can somehwhat have the uniformed look of everyone having being close to clean shaven, but if it was really about uniformity, then there would be no sideburns or mustaches allowed at all.
The big reason you see a difference from back then is what is now social acceptable as looking trim and proper. The military always wants everything to look nice and neat. It is like putting on a big show. So instead of having all these different soldiers running around that are unshaven and not taking care as to how thier facial hair looks, the put regulations on the facial hair. Sideburns and mustaches are allowed, but they have regulations on how they have to look and be trimmed.
But like I said, if it was about uniformity, there would be no mustaches or sideburns allowed at all.
