Century Limited
Amtrak's 20th-Century Limited is in route from Chicago to New York at 112 km/h, when..?
Amtrak's 20th-Century Limited is in route from Chicago to New York at 112 km/h, when the engineer spots a cow on the track. The train brakes to a halt in 2.3 min, stopping in front of the cow.
a) What is the magnitude of the train's (constant) acceleration?
_______m/s^2
b) What is the direction of the acceleration?
- eastward
- westward
- southward
- northward
I can't seem to do get the correct answer... Thanks
Oh and I forgot about c)
c) How far was the train from the cow when the engineer first applied the brakes?
______km
1st response: part b) is actually westward like 2nd response said. Part c) is wrong also... Anybody know how to do part c)?
Convert km/hr into m/s by multiplying by (1000 / 3600) and min into s by multiplying by 60.
a) a = v / t = 31 m/s / 138 s = 0.22 m/s²
b) Chicago is West of New York, so the acceleration is Eastward.
c) d = (vf² - vi²) / 2a = (31 m/s)² / (2 x 0.22 m/s²) = 2,200 m or 2.2 km
EDIT: Oops, I thought the problem stated the train was going to Chicago. My bad. With that being said, the answer to part b is westward. Sorry for the mistake.
EDIT 2: Part c is wrong? In that case, please tell me the answer so I can fix my mistake(s).
