Car acting very strange need assistance?

I drive a 98 Mitsubishi Montero Sport . Tonight my cars lights were very dim on the way to the store and we noticed different dashboard lights coming we then died in the parking lot and we couldn't restart we had someone jump start then it died again. We bought a new battery, replaced and started driving home, no sooner then we left the parking lot then the car started doing it again. We realized keeping it at a high idle kept it going so we did so all the way home dying a few times when we had to stop at red lights....What is the most likely cause for this problem?

your alternator either when bad or you lost a belt. good luck
