Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) was founded in 1998 by Ericsson, IBM, Intel, Nokia and Toshiba with the aim of using short range wireless communications technology to transmit digital voice and data over a personal area network where a wide range of portable electronic devices ranging from hands-free headsets, PDA's, laptops to mobile phones are able to connect and communicate with each other.
The name Bluetooth comes from King Harald Blatan (Bluetooth) of Denmark.
The Bluetooth SIG global headquarters are in Bellevue, Washington, USA and has local offices in Hong Kong and Malmo, Sweden.
