2003 New Beetle Turbo Auto Transmission: How to shift out of 'Park'?

How can I manually shift the automatic transmission of 2003 VW New Beetle out of 'Park'. It seems that the neutral safety mechanism is malfunctioning so the stepping on the brake does not help.

Your brake light switch is bad. There was a recall, called the N4 campaign.

There is a trick though. When you turn the key on. you move the shifter at the exact same time as turning the key on. Move it to Neutral position, and the car will start. Sometimes you have to move the shifter between Neutral and Drive, and Neutral and reverse. And as it starts, move it into Drive.
