Used car warranty when can I use it?

I have a friend that just bought a used Suv 2002 I had it for a few weeks now almost a month
he noticed the the transmission seems like its slipping or hesitating and take a minute to change into gear just driving up the street and it sound really loud while driving and if U put it in awd,4wheel Hi or Low it sounds like its on its last leg his warranty covers the transmission but he was wondering if he had to wait for the transmission to completely fail or can he file a claim on his warranty before the SUV breaks down its used car warranty he bought from the car dealer

If somethings wrong with it take it in, it doesn't have to completely go out to require repair. Repairs are generally covered under warranties, not just replacement.
